Captain Emil Kapaun: Captain Emil Kapaun was a Catholic priest and United States Army Captain who served as an Army Chaplain in World War II and Korea. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, Father Kapaun died in a N. Korea POW camp, was declared a Servant of God by Pope John Paul II, the first stage on the path to canonization.
Rocky Bleier: Rocky Bleier was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin. The oldest of four children, Rocky graduated from Xavier High School and went on to play football for the University of Notre Dame. Rocky was a member of the 1966 National Championship team and Notre Dame Team Captain in 1967.
After graduating with a degree in business management, Rocky played one season for the Pittsburgh Steelers before being drafted into the US Army. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and was shipped out in May 1969 and assigned to Company C, 4th Battalion (Light), 31st Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade. Rocky was assigned as a squad grenadier operating a 40mm M79 grenade launcher.
On August 20th, Bleier was on patrol in Hiep Duc when he was shot in the left thigh when his platoon was ambushed. While he was down, an enemy grenade landed nearby resulting in shrapnel into Rocky’s lower right leg and blowing off part of his right foot.
Rocky was told by his doctors that he would never play football again. Nevertheless, Bleier returned to the Steelers and tried to make a comeback. After being waived several times and enduring an intense workout regime, Rocky earned a spot on the Steelers’ lineup in 1974. In 1976, Rocky rushed for over 1,000 yards. Rocky went on to play in the first of four Steeler Super Bowls including catching the winning touchdown pass from Terry Bradshaw.
